Green Imaging was built by radiologists who got tired of the price being a secret

Green Imaging is a full-service virtual medical imaging network led and operated by a group of board-certified radiologists. It was founded in 2012 in Houston by Cristin A. Dickerson, MD, after she saw how few affordable options existed for a city where roughly one in five people was uninsured.

Rather than borrow millions to build another imaging center, she did something more interesting. The centers her radiology group already served were running at half capacity at best, so Green Imaging began buying unused scanner time at a discount and passing that price to patients. She has described it as a Travelocity model for imaging. It started in Texas and now spans the country.

That structure is why the pricing works. Because Green Imaging contracts with existing facilities rather than building its own, overhead stays low. In their own words, high quality facilities, minus the opulence.

The part that matters most to a patient is the promise attached to it: the cash-pay price they give you is the final price, the radiologist fee is not added on afterward, and there is no bill arriving weeks later.

The short version
Who reads your scan
A highly trained radiologist reads your exam and sends a report to your doctor. In most cases that is a Green Imaging radiologist, and where another radiologist reads it, Green Imaging radiologists maintain medical oversight.
What the price includes
The cash-pay price is the final price. There is no extra charge for the radiologist fee, and you pay up front rather than receiving a bill afterward.
How long results take
Turnaround varies by location and typically runs from two days to about a week. Green Imaging asks you to call if your doctor has not received the report.
How you pay at the facility
You show a voucher at your appointment. You do not show an insurance card and you do not pay anything at the facility itself.
What they cover
X-ray, mammogram, MRI, CT, PET/CT, ultrasound, bone density, echocardiogram, arthrogram, myelogram and nuclear medicine.

Why we work together

Two companies that will tell you when to use your insurance

That sounds like a strange thing to advertise. It is the single most useful test of whether a direct-pay company is on your side, and both of us pass it.

UberDoc

We price the specialist visit up front and tell you before you book. If your deductible is met and using your plan would cost you less for the visit, that is worth knowing, and we would rather you heard it from us than found out afterward.

Paying cash for the consultation does not commit you to paying cash for what follows. Depending on the physician, the service and your plan, treatment after the visit may be billable through your insurance.

Green Imaging

They are largely cash based, and they say so plainly. But they also tell patients that if you have met your deductible, or expect to, you should message them and they will usually point you toward a partner site that is in network with your plan.

A cash-pay imaging company sending you to an in-network facility when that is cheaper for you is not a normal thing to find. It is the reason we picked them.
The part most people get stuck on

Almost every X-ray needs a signed order. That is what UberDoc is for.

Green Imaging states that the majority of exams they perform require a signed physician order, because it determines which procedure you actually need and what it will cost. Traditionally getting that order means a primary care appointment, a referral and a wait. On UberDoc you book the specialist directly and the order comes out of that visit.

1

See the specialist

Book a board-certified specialist for the body part that is bothering you. Orthopedics for a joint, pulmonology for a chest concern, ENT for sinuses. One flat price, shown before you book, usually within days.

On UberDoc
2

Get the order

If imaging is the right next step, your specialist writes the order at the visit and explains what they are looking for. If it is not the right next step, they will tell you that too, and you will have saved yourself a scan.

At your visit
3

Get the X-ray

Take the order to a Green Imaging facility near you. The price is confirmed before you go, you show a voucher rather than an insurance card, and the radiologist reading is included.

With Green Imaging
Already have an order from another doctor? You do not need to see anyone on UberDoc first. Take your existing order straight to Green Imaging and skip to step three. If you are having trouble getting an order from your own physician, Green Imaging says they can sometimes assist in obtaining one, occasionally for a small fee.
Once you have your order

How Green Imaging works, in four steps

Described using Green Imaging’s own published process.

1

Send them your details

Call or text Green Imaging with your order, your location and the study you need. Text is often the fastest route.

2

Get your price and voucher

They confirm the facility, the appointment and the all-in price, then issue a voucher that covers the study.

3

Show the voucher

At the appointment you show the voucher. You do not show an insurance card and you do not pay anything at the facility.

4

Your report is read and sent

A radiologist reads the exam and sends the report to your doctor. Turnaround typically ranges from two days to about a week.

What it costs

Two prices, both visible before you commit

UberDoc prices the specialist visit. Green Imaging prices the scan. Neither one bills you afterward, and neither one is a claim you have to chase.

What X-rays are good at

The right test for some things, the wrong test for others

An X-ray is fast, low dose and excellent at showing bone. It is not the right tool for soft tissue, which is where MRI and ultrasound come in. Your specialist decides which one you actually need, and sometimes the answer is none.

Bones and joints

The most common reason for an X-ray, and the thing it does best.

  • Suspected fracture after an injury
  • Arthritis and joint space assessment
  • Alignment and post-treatment checks

Chest

A first look at the lungs, heart size and the structures around them.

  • Persistent cough or shortness of breath
  • Suspected pneumonia or fluid
  • Pre-operative clearance

Spine, sinuses and abdomen

Often a starting point before deciding whether more detailed imaging is needed.

  • Back and neck pain assessment
  • Chronic sinus problems
  • Swallowed objects and bowel gas patterns
This page is general information, not medical advice. It does not tell you whether you need an X-ray. That is a clinical decision for the specialist you see. If you are having a medical emergency, call 911 or go to an emergency department rather than booking here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I just book an X-ray directly?

Usually not. Green Imaging states that the majority of exams they perform require a signed physician order, which is how they determine the right procedure and your cost. That is why this page starts with the specialist visit: book on UberDoc, get the order at the visit, then take it to Green Imaging. If you already have an order from another doctor, go straight to Green Imaging.

Who is Green Imaging?

A full-service virtual medical imaging network led and operated by a group of board-certified radiologists, founded in 2012 in Houston. Rather than building imaging centers, they contract with existing facilities and buy unused scanner capacity, which is how the pricing stays low. Their network includes facilities in all 50 US states.

Some facilities in their network are only available to contracted clients and their members and may not appear on the public map, so call or text them if you do not see a site near you.

Is the radiologist’s reading really included?

Yes. Green Imaging’s position is that the cash-pay price they quote is the final price and there is no extra charge for the radiologist fee. In most cases a Green Imaging radiologist reads your exam, and where another radiologist reads it, Green Imaging radiologists maintain medical oversight. A separate bill from the reading radiologist is one of the most common surprises in imaging and it is specifically what this route avoids.

How do I schedule and what do I pay at the facility?

Scheduling is handled by Green Imaging, not by UberDoc. Call (844) 968-4647 or text (713) 524-9190 between 7:00am and 6:00pm CST with your order ready. They confirm the facility, the appointment and the price, then issue a voucher.

At the appointment you show the voucher. You do not show an insurance card and you do not pay anything at the facility itself.

How long do results take?

Turnaround varies by location and typically runs from about two days to a week. The report goes to the doctor who ordered the study. Green Imaging asks you to call them if your doctor has not received it.

What if using my insurance would actually be cheaper?

Then use your insurance, and both companies will tell you so. Green Imaging’s own guidance is that if you have met your deductible or expect to, you should message them and they will usually point you toward a partner site that is in network with your plan. UberDoc takes the same position on the consultation.

Do I need insurance or a referral for the UberDoc visit?

No to both. You book the specialist directly at a flat price shown before you book, with no referral and no insurance approval required.

Can I use my HSA or FSA?

Diagnostic imaging and specialist consultations are generally qualified medical expenses and can usually be paid with an HSA or FSA card. Eligibility depends on the service and your plan administrator, so confirm with them before you rely on it.

Is an X-ray the right test for me?

That is a clinical question, not one this page can answer. X-rays are excellent for bone and a reasonable first look at the chest, but they show soft tissue poorly, which is where MRI and ultrasound are better. Part of what you are paying the specialist for is deciding which study you actually need, and sometimes concluding that you do not need one at all.

Do you order imaging for your patients?

Reach direct-pay patients who need to be seen quickly, on your own terms and at your own price. Free to list, no exclusivity, no claims to file.
